Beauty Secrets: Glycerin

Updated on January 3, 2011

When I discovered Glycerin, I fell absolutely in love. What is Glycerin? Well, it's a colorless goopy liquid which draws moisture to itself. It has the consistency of corn syrup, and is sweet in taste. Glycerin is used in so many different beauty products such as: Lip gloss, Shampoos, Soaps, and lotions. It has so many different purposes, and is a must have for anyone who enjoys DIY beauty. At $1.00-2.00 a bottle, how can you resist giving it a try? Here's a few ways in which you can use glycerin.

Glycerin Beauty Uses:

1. Mixing Medium

Glycerin makes a fabulous mixing medium! What does that mean? It means that you can use glycerin to apply make up. This works best for applying loose mineral eye shadows, and turning powders and eye shadows into liners. It works great, and is much cheaper then buying an actual mixing medium.

2. Glycerin & Hair

If you dilute Glycerin with equal parts water it makes a great moisturizer for hair. WARNING, do not do this in dry areas, as it will cause your hair to become very coarse. It is best for humid areas, as glycerin draws moisture. Especially good for coarse hair, as it will draw moisture into your cuticle.

3. Moisturizer

Glycerin is also a great moisturizer for dry skin. Combine glycerin and essential oils, such as rose oil, and apply to the skin. As a pampering method, apply glycerin mixture thickly to feet and put on a pain of spa socks. Sleep overnight with glycerin on your feet, and you'll be amazed by how smooth and soft they are in the morning. We all deserve a little pampering every once in a while. Why not do it at an affordable price?

4. Make up fix spray

Do you know about Mac Studio fix? Do you not want to spend the money for it? Well glycerin makes an excellent fix spray. Just add a tablespoon of glycerin to a spray bottle, and fill the rest with water. If you feel as though your make up is too cakey spray face after applying foundation. The glycerin will leave your face looking hydrated, and natural.

5. Glycerin Make Up Remover

If you want a cheap an affordable way to scrub away make up, give glycerin a try. Apply it to a cotton ball, and rub away your make up. Glycerin also makes an amazing cleaner for make up brushes. Apply to bristles and use a towel to clean brushes. It works great, and you don't need to purchase a brush shampoo!

6. Glycerin Lip Gloss

Glycerin is GREAT to use as lip gloss, or lip moisturizer. Apply the glossy mixture to your lips and feel how smooth they are. If you're feeling really creative, heat up glycerin and Castor oil in the microwave. You can then poor the hot mixture into a make up pot, and have your own home made lip gloss! Make things even more interesting by adding pigments and flavors.

These are my main reasons for using glycerin, and I think they're well worth the purcahse. With a bottle typically being under $2.00 it is more than worth it to pick up a bottle from your local pharmacy. I hope these glycerin beauty uses help you too!
