Why I will Never Shop On Ebay Again

If you're asking yourself "Should I buy a computer off ebay?", you might want to read this first.

For my husbands Birthday we were incredibly excited to buy him a desktop computer. We had some problems with his laptop, and he was out a computer. Since I am glued to my laptop we really needed to get him something to spend some time on as well. We found a really good deal on a desktop on ebay for around $250, the shipping was around $40 dollars. I've been shopping on ebay for years, and didn't have a doubt in my mind that we'd be satisfied with our purchase. Oh boy, was I wrong! This entire situation was a head ache from hell, and I can honestly say its resulted in me never wanting to purchase anything from ebay ever again.

There has seemed to be some sort of downfall in ebays tactics lately. I noticed it first when I ordered a 5x8 rug which I never received. However, I did get a refund on this purchase. When we received the computer we waited the allotted amount of time before turning it on. I had heard that when things come through the mail you should give them some time to sit before turning them on. As soon as we turned on the computer, the power supply blew. My husband was very, very angry by this. I reported to the seller that the power supply had blown right after it did. He went on to tell me that he didn't understand why it would have happened and that we must have done something to the computer in order for it to act this way. We decided to go best buy and bought a new power supply. In return, this blew as well. Because we still had the receipt, we decided to go buy another one. Finally! It worked. However, the previous power being blown caused the motherboard to malfunction. I don't know enough about computers to explain in full what happened, but I do know that it wouldn't boot or work. After talking with the seller on ebay for days about how I wanted a refund I finally decided to take the matter to ebay. I decided to appeal the case.

This is when Ebay did something that I never expected. They issued the case in the sellers favor, and we were completely out $250 dollars. I am choosing to write about this on my blog, because I honestly don't want anyone else to have to go through this. It would have been different it the item had cost $20 or so, like most of my ebay purchases-- but this was $250! I couldn't believe that ebay ruled the case in his favor! We had done nothing but turn the computer on, and never even had a chance to enjoy the computer or even use it for that matter. The entire time the seller kept telling me that I had done something to the computer, not taking responsibility what so ever.

Be careful if you're contemplating a purchase on ebay. I am sure they're good for small things, but definitely not electronics. I am beyond angry about this purchase, and honestly I am just in shock about the whole thing. I honestly will be deleting my ebay account. I liked amazon much better anyways! Just a word of warning to those contemplating buying from ebay, hopefully I'll save someone else the money, time, and stress. If you insist on shopping, at least read these tips ahead of time.

Sorry to hear this happened to you LSpel. I tried to buy a wedding dress (from China) on ebay 3 years ago, never got it or my money back. And I've never bought anything from that site since. I agree. Amazon is MUCH better to deal with!

Yes they are, and I am sorry you had to go through that as well! I never had problems with ebay until this last year. I just couldn't believe it! I used to tell everyone to buy on ebay, but I've definitely changed my mind on the matter.

Akkk! That is horrible. I have sold professionally for ten years on eBay and soemtimes eBay is the Wild Wild West of retail. It is difficult to tell what went wrong here as I would suppose that the seller would want the item to function just as much as you. Looking at the feed back ratings is important. It's a big world out there and it sounds like you might do better shopping about anywhere else. RJ

I understand that the seller wouldn't intentionally send me a computer that malfunctioned. Its the fact that it did, and that I am not getting a refund for it. I understand that he would have been out the money as well, its just frustrating. I think I deserved at least a partial refund in this matter.

Yep! And any local store would have taken care of it properly, full refund, take back the lemon etc.

Sad story, its a horrible situation I have found myself in also. I am an honest seller on eBay and have been for years but its a discrace how eBay treats its most loyal followers.

Did you pay with Paypal? Any chance you can place a claim with them now as they are usually quite good with siding with the buyer.

Teddy I'll have to try that, I don't really know how to go about it? I have also sold countless of things on ebay. I really thought ebay would appreciate the fact that I had no negative feedback what so ever, yet the seller did.

They are the big fish im afraid and they always seem to know best...where as I tend to disagree.

Head on to the payment page on paypal and click the details link next to the payment you made for the computer. Head down to the lower half of the page and there should be a resolution centre link, click it and follow the instructions. You might find it easier going through them than eBay...but then again eBay owns Paypal now...worth a go though.

Wish you luck!

After spending an hour on the phone with paypal disputing the case (after we already had it ruled in the sellers favor) we FINALLY got our money back. Thank you pay pal!

I am glad that Paypal came through for you. I have had problems with Ebay too but have had nothing but good service from Amazon. Great hub. Thanks for the heads up regarding Ebay's treatment of loyal customers.

Yeah..... they came through, yet still haven't sent me my refund. They've told me it would be 24-48hrs for the last week. The last time I talked to them I told the representative "I understand its easier to just tell me I will receive my refund to get me off your back... but I am telling you, Jason -- I will keep calling!".

Glad to hear PayPal came through for you. If you had used a credit card company, you probably would have been able to get your money back, too.

But I wouldn't write off every seller on eBay due to one bad experience. I've purchased many things on eBay and have only had one minor problem. Just be sure to only buy from sellers with all positive feedback from many customers.

Wow! So sorry about that! But thanks a million for the warning--I've browsed and even bought stuff on eBay but after this I think I'll stick to Amazon!

Whooa!! Totally sorry to hear about your story and ebay. It is a good thing that paypal refunded your money. Buying a computer on eBay to me is dicey...I prefer sticking with making a purchase in the stores. I have bought and sold on eBay never had any shockers such as this but I have never purchased any big ticket items on eBay. Happy you got your money back.
